Your Own Private Steamboat
While every skier has his or her own preferences on snow type, terrain, skis, and apres-ski cocktail of choice, almost all skiers can agree on one thing: an empty mountain is much better than a crowded one. And despite over 200 inches of snow for the season, and over 5 feet (!) of snow in just the first half of January, the slopes are virtually empty this morning, and the lift lines, well, there aren’t any lift lines.
I recently spent a week skiing some of the other ski resorts around Colorado (resorts that rhyme with Hasbeen, Smelluride, and Slowmass) and I can tell you from experience that not only does Steamboat have the deepest snow conditions in the state right now, but we’ve got the best snow conditions as well. The groomers are smooth and carveable, the tree skiing is soft and forgiving, and the coverage is excellent. Don’t waste your time pondering where to ski this weekend, just type “Steamboat Springs” into that GPS, and let it guide you to some of the best skiing in the country.
Although I didn’t have time to explore the entire mountain today, I did find excellent snow wherever I did go. Cyclone (behind Four Points Lodge) was fast and groomed to perfection. Also near Four Points Lodge, Twister is finally filled in and I had fun jumping into the trees to skier’s left where untracked snow was easily found.
Over on the Sundown side of the mountain, I found similar conditions to Four Points. Immaculate groomers, soft and fluffy tree lines, and beautiful clear skies. 2:30 trees was very fun, and I didn’t see another person until I hit Lower High Noon.
After so much snow I have to admit it is very nice to be on the mountain when visibility is at infinity, the skies are blue, and the wind is virtually non-existent. Mr. Weatherman says it should stay this way for at least a few days, so if you’re looking for big views and great skiing, get up to the ‘Boat and get after it.
