Fall is here. Winter is on the way
One of my favorite things about living in the Colorado Rockies is the anticipation of the changing of the seasons. Today is the first day of fall, but Steamboat has been having fall-like weather for a few weeks already. With crisp mornings and afternoons in the 70s, fall is a great time to get outside, check out the fall colors and enjoy the final months of flip-flop weather.
We had an amazing summer in Steamboat. A rainy and snowy spring made for one of the best wildflower seasons in years. Even as the leaves are turning gold, we’re still spotting wildflowers across the mountain. The extra moisture kept the Yampa Valley a vibrant shade of green right up until the grasses and trees started showing off their fall colors.
It’s always hard to say goodbye to summer (especially cocktails on the patio), but pulling a down jacket out of the closet and adding an extra blanket to the bed carry their own excitement: Winter is on the way.
Steamboat saw its first snowflakes Friday morning with a dusting at Four Points Lodge. The snow melted almost as soon as the sun rose, but with opening day 63 days away, the excitement of the seasonal milestone was felt across town.
There’s so much beauty in the Yampa Valley during each season, but fall has always been one of my favorites. Be sure to get outside and enjoy it.
Here’s to cool nights, warm days, tacky trails and the sweet smell of fallen leaves.
