Two Sport Day
With the days feeling longer and the temperatures warming, something special happens in Steamboat this time of year. The opportunity to enjoy a full day of activities is right here, right now. For me, that includes skiing in the morning and riding my bike after noon. But for you that might include skiing and snowshoeing, or snowboarding and swimming. Whatever it might be for your personal taste, just be sure you’re enjoying springtime in the Rockies!
I started my morning today by fueling up at Gondola Joe’s and making my way towards Sunshine Liftline. Just as advertised, the warming sun was already set on high and natural light enveloped the entire scene. Birds were chirping as I cruised down my run and dug my edges into the glazed snow below. My turns came fast and furious as my thighs began to twinge from exhilaration. Needless to say that my day started on a high note, and runs found over by the Sundown and Sunshine side of our resort are a recommended place to begin yours.
I found the snow was already softening on the flatter sections of our hill, including the areas surrounding Rainbow Saddle and Tower. The top section of Heavenly Daze had just begun seeing a glimpse of direct sun when I made my turns there. But the snow was excellent and I once again found myself making short-swing arcs in the surface from the metal blades of my sticks.
Storm Peak face was probably one of the highlights of my day. The packed powder here was chilled overnight and the snow was plentiful. Being an upper-mountain trail, the elevated air and lower temperatures keep the snow base incredibly deep. So be sure to get out and explore this area of the mountain at some point today.
As you find yourself in the Gondola Square base area today, be sure to glad hand our friends from Noosa Finest Yoghurt. They’re doling out free samples and I never skip “second breakfast” so of course I grabbed one. My favorite flavor is Apple, but I can’t see how you could find a bad one.
So fuel up… it’s going to be a long day. Think about the two sports you love and tackle them both today. Your body will never feel more energized than when you partake in the great outdoors in Steamboat Springs.
Happy Trails,
Dave Wittlinger, Alpine skier
