The Sounds of Winter
It’s a beautiful morning in the Boat, and we only have two days until Scholarship/Opening Day. I woke up early to these incredible mountain colors and the sound of snow guns firing and had to catch the few moments before the light was full.

After a music-filled weekend, the sound of snow flying at the base made me dream of freshies to come. We can hope for more of the real stuff as early as tonight into tomorrow.
Colder temperatures this weekend made conditions ripe for snowmaking on Mount Werner. Meanwhile, Steamboat students created magical sounds of their own in a two-day orchestra intensive. Maestro Ernest Richardson, conductor of the Steamboat and Omaha Symphony Orchestras, braved a 4 a.m. flight Saturday, two snowy mountain passes and Front Range skier traffic to conduct young Steamboat strings players of all ages.

Yes, many Steamboat kids who rip up the slopes as Winter Sports Club skiers and riders also double as dedicated musicians. This weekend, they had the opportunity to come together for a series of rehearsals and a culminating concert Sunday afternoon at Steamboat Springs High School. There were at least 7o students bringing their musical mojo on violin, viola, cello and bass. Their sound, smiles and laughter filled the room with an electricity that felt like the beginning of something big.
If you missed yesterday’s performance, you can catch the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra with student musicians, the Steamboat Festival Choir and Broadway star Tiffany Haas November 29th and 30th in Finding Christmas. It’s one of the most memorable ways to kick off the holiday season in Steamboat.
We love our Steamboat kids and supporting their efforts is like planting a seed you know will grow into something beautiful. You can support budding young skiers by hitting the slopes this Wednesday. Season passes aren’t valid until Thanksgiving Day, but Scholarship Day proceeds benefit the Winter Sports Club, which has turned out many Olympic athletes over the years.

Sharpen your edges and get your gear. As my student Levi likes to say, in two more sleeps we’ll be skiing on Mount Werner. See you on the slopes!
