Something about waking up to click my heals into my bindings and glide my way down the mountain as the sun rises gives my spirit a lift. Perhaps it’s the fact that Valentine’s Day is looming but I can’t say enough about how much I love this sport.

Some of the best runs to explore today can be found off the Pony Express chairlift. My comrades and I dropped into Fool’s Gold and followed the flow over to Royal Flush. The top section was powder fresh. I’m guessing about 4 inches of softness but plenty forgiving under that. As I tracked my way down, I found the lower section snow a bit more clingy. But perhaps its as basic as my sticks needing new wax.

After getting my fill on the east side, we schussed our way over to Three O’Clock. With open hearts and minds we tracked up some of the nicest, most peaceful fluff I’ve skied in several days. The top section was pleasantly groomed in the last few days leaving a gentle feel under foot. I happened to have my fat powder skis on today so dicing up the trail in front of me seemed effortless. As I cut over to Two O’Clock, I found groomed terrain that would make any slalom expert sing its praise.

West Side is where I recommend if you’re looking for more of the firm stuff. Carving wide arcs across this black diamond was exhilarating and I’d highly recommend you explore over there at some point. Especially as the sun began to rise over the horizon, I couldn’t help but once again feel the love of the great, wide open. What an amazing day to be skiing Steamboat.

After last night’s incredible Fireworks Extravaganza where we witnessed North America’s heaviest firework explode, it’s hard to imagine being in a better place. So keep yourself open to new experiences or a rekindled fondness of our resort. We look forward to hosting you soon.

Happy Trails!
