After a few dry days here in Steamboat, some new snow has come our way offering up fresh turns this morning.  Although it wasn’t a big storm, it was just enough to freshen up the groomers allowing us to leave tracks behind the tails of our skis.    Conditions are the best we have seen in a few days and it is a good morning to get out and carve up some groomers while more snow falls on the mountain.  Just after the lifts opened today, the snow started falling more consistently hinting at deeper turns in our very near future.

The day started out with mixed clouds, but the storm clouds have quickly moved in bringing colder temperatures and a pretty snowy view.  It was warm at the base area, but at the top of the mountain it was a different story so you may want to grab an extra layer today.  The fast change in temperature has created a cold dense cloud up high leaving a frost layer on goggles as you cruise down the mountain.  Be prepared to stop and wipe that layer off!  The higher you go on the mountain the harder it is snowing; hoping for a few inches by the end of the day!

The inch of fresh snow this morning was a nice little treat on the groomers.  The groomers had mixed conditions depending on the aspect; west facing slopes seem to be a bit firm while south and north will be your best bets today.  The layer underneath was firm in spots, but rarely was it an ice patch.  Best turns of the day were found on West Side, Storm Face, Rainbow and Buddy’s Run.  Hopefully the storm continues throughout the day adding a few more inches to transform the mountain back into a powder paradise!

With another busy weekend coming up, today is a great chance to get out for some uncrowded slopes.  The weather is coming in throughout the day, so dress appropriately and grab your low light lenses.  I would keep it to the groomers until the fresh snow stacks up, but there are plenty of runs to choose from.

Pick of the mountain today is Rainbow: The snow was surprisingly soft and the grooming team did a nice job on it making for some really fun turns.

Have a great day on the mountain and THINK SNOW!
