Steamboat – There’s an App for That
I have a confession to make, every morning during ski season, I wake up and immediately check the Steamboat App for how much new snow fell on the mountain. I am not alone in this. Really, this is a thing.
The App tells me that an inch of fresh snow fell during the past 24 hours and I get excited to ski some more challenging terrain with that forgiving new snow.
On the gondola, I check the App for which black diamond runs have been groomed. I am excited to see Hurricane and Tornado on the list and head that way immediately. On Tornado, my skis soared down the fast conditions like rocket ships. I had the run to myself and it was exciting to blast down the run full speed and make huge turns.
Hurricane was equally as fast and furious. I switched on the Run Tracker function on my App and started recording my speed, vertical feet, distance, number of runs, and altitude skied. The App confirmed my suspicion that the mountain was skiing really fast today, but I won’t tell you how fast I went because I don’t want to worry my mother. Hi mom!
One of my favorite features of the app is the GPS Trail Map feature. I’ll be honest with you, my sense of direction isn’t the greatest. I only know this mountain well because of the amount of time I’ve spent on it. I wish that the App with its GPS Trail Map feature was available when I was new to town and lost like Fievel from the movie An American Tale. Want to know where you are on the mountain? Trying to figure out the best way to meet up with your ski buddies? Want to know the quickest way down? Turn on the GPS Trail Map feature on your App and it will show you exactly where you are and each of the runs (and their level of difficulty) around you. Hit the compass button at the top to toggle between a fixed North point or to allow your phone to act as a compass for you. Kudos to the app developers for this feature!
There’s so much more to the App, such as weather, forecast, webcams, lift status, dining, a friend finder, and social media links. Best of all, the App is free! Download it for iPhone here or Android devices here. Try it out and give me some feedback. What would you like to see on the App?
Getting techy with it,
