Snowy Surprise
I was happy to see the snowflakes flying this morning as I got to the top of the gondola. Though there are only a few errant flakes at the base, the snow is light and steady on Sunshine Peak.

There’s a chilly wind this morning, so bring your neck gaiters and low-light lenses. Visibility is still decent at the top, and you can ride the edges of runs for better depth perception.
I opted for early runs this morning, and the corduroy was firm and carveable. Sunshine Lift Line to Rolex was a beautiful slice of groom, and the left side of Two O’Clock had corduroy that was just the right consistency to sink an edge into. I loved the left side of Heavenly Daze and See Me on the way down. This morning, I had both to myself. What better way to start the busy week than with some peaceful turns on snow-dusted runs?

If the snow keeps up, the afternoon skiing will be great. It’s a little bit of a toss up with the wind direction bringing the storm from the south. Basically, it could dump or stay just to the south of us, so please get on your snow dancing shoes! Keep track of the storm and, if you are flexible, wait for some more fresh to fall before skiing. It looks like locals may get another midweek reward with a more promising jet stream arriving before the crowds come for Presidents Day weekend.

This past weekend marked the 105th Steamboat Winter Carnival and a chance to see the spirit of this amazing community. Little ones had a blast tearing down the mountain in the Soda Pop Slalom on Friday. The many carnival festivities, including Steamboat-style fireworks complete with a sonic boom finale and Saturday powder made for a great weekend.

The Sunday morning sunshine had us literally seeing stars as snow melted off the trees and sent sparkling crystals into the vivid blue sky. There were plenty of freshies to be found in the side-country, where our views were of endless, pristine snow fields.
I hope this week brings a white bounty for you to ski. In the meantime, have fun cheering on our Olympians!
