Happy powder Monday! I can’t tell you how delighted I am to ski fresh snow. I love the feeling of it falling on my helmet and jacket, melting on my face, floating over my skis. The first couple of runs down Heavenly Daze to Vogue were a little slice of heaven. Old friend powder, I hope you’ll stay awhile.

With four to five inches falling overnight plus a few more this morning, skiers and riders have a reason to smile. It’s still snowing and temperatures are staying cold, which means the snow guns are firing. With a few cold days in the forecast this week, our faithful snowmaking crew should be able to make their white magic around the clock. See Joel Gratz’s Steamboat Daily Snow report for updates and stay tuned for notices of new terrain opening.

My first run was through fluffy powder. The consistency of the snow is light and airy. I could feel a crisp layer underneath, so I was glad to have recently tuned boards. Frankly, I didn’t mind because the feeling of the light, fresh snow underfoot had me grinning ear to ear. Groomers are doing an amazing job of keeping the runs in shape, but there are definitely some early season lumps and obstacles, so it’s best to make lots of turns and ski with care. I’ve been liking skier’s right of both Heavenly Daze and Vogue, and you’ll still find patches of powder on the edges if you hit the slopes today.

Snow guns blazing on the Nastar course

If you have a favorite trick for snow manifestation, today is a great day to practice it. See those flakes falling in your mind’s eye, feel the light, damp flakes on your skin. Today is our best chance for accumulation for the near future.

It’s a busy Monday with the Crescent Ski Council in the house for a race camp. The racers I met on the gondola are really hoping the Nastar course will open soon.

Billy looks good with a coat of powder

As we watch the snow fly today, we can contemplate the season of giving, receiving and a little holiday shopping. For those looking to make a donation to a local organization before year’s end, tomorrow is Yampa Valley Gives Day, held in conjunction with Colorado Gives Day. Welcome back, winter

If you are in the mood to get your shop on, Ski Haus is hosting a shopping event Tuesday night with 20 percent off for ladies. It’s a great time to pick up some gifts and possibly something for yourself, too!

Bring on the powder!
