Happiness is…new snow! How sweet it is to feel wintry air and a soft layer of freshies under my skis again. The three and a half inches that fell overnight were enough to make the groomers soft and even some off-the-rolled track turns fluffy and forgiving.

Freshies off Tomahawk

The fresh, cold air on my face was a welcome change. This was the first morning I’ve needed my gator in weeks and feeling crisp air on my cheeks made me smile. Temperatures are staying cool up top, which will keep the snow in good shape, and swirling clouds are giving way to sunshine.

Sunshine Lift Line

Enjoy the sunny skies this afternoon, as the next chance for snow is tonight into tomorrow.

Fresh lines on Westside

I stayed over on Sunshine Peak for the first part of the morning. The snow is in great shape on many of the groomers and the views of the snow-dusted valley are stunning. Sunshine Lift Line is in skiing smooth, and Westside must have had a late groom as there was an even thicker layer of fluff on top.

The groomed runs are the safest bet, as our dusting is just enough to cover up springtime obstacles. However, off Tomahawk and to the sides of Flintlock, there were some powder turns where you didn’t feel a crusty layer underneath. I didn’t have time to ski the runs off Morningside, but imagine they’ll be worth the trip.

My favorites of the morning were Storm Peak Face nice and early and Westside. Be careful on some of the groomed slopes and make some extra turns. Our groomers are doing an amazing job preserving the snow, but there are some divots to watch out for on High Noon, Upper Rainbow, Heavenly Daze and some of the other well-tracked runs. Our grooming friends are farming the snow to keep us skiing and riding, not downloading, and any storms that come will help them out.

On the way down for the morning, Lower Rainbow offered nice, firm corduroy, and Bashor Bowl fresh lines were a welcome treat on the last run of the day.

There’s another fun week ahead on Mt. Werner with Sunset Happy Hour on Thursday (otherwise known as my birthday) and a concert at the base featuring Con Brio on Saturday. Classical music enthusiasts can see the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra in their “Phoenix Rising” concerts this Saturday and Sunday, April 8th and 9th.

Happy sunny powder Monday!
