Operating an outdoor recreation business responsibly is more than just a common-place expectation in today’s market. It’s paramount in guiding our business ethics, compliance and safety. As a top priority across our employees, guests, and shareholders, and we continually empower our team to operate with integrity and to act responsible manner.

Recently, we’ve highlighted two such example projects where we took extra effort to affect long term sustainable goals.

Recycling Over 11 Tons of Steel Piping from the Steamboat Grand Hotel Remodel

The Steamboat Grand and Steamboat Ski Resort repurposed and recycled over 11 tons of galvanized and steel piping associated with the Steamboat Grand Hotel remodel. As part of the hotel renovations, ~20,000 feet of the aging water pipe infrastructure was replaced; updating the dated piping and making way for a state-of-the-art fire alarm system.

Throughout renovations, hotel officials worked closely with contractors to send all replaced galvanized steel and copper piping to a metal recycler. Much of that material will be melted down and recycled into new steel and copper pipes, while some will be repurposed into fencing, utilized by area ranchers and other members of the agriculture community. These efforts align with the resort’s Path to Zero Waste, an initiative aimed at diverting waste away from the landfill.

Fewer Single Occupancy Cars Means More Parking For Guests

On November 21st, Steamboat Resort launched the Steamboat Employee Carpool Program. The program is targeted at easing commutes, reducing parking congestion, and lowering scope 3 carbon emissions. In addition to public transportation and resort coordinated shuttles, Steamboat employees are encouraged to carpool to and from the resort as part of their daily commute. Carpooling reduces wear and tear on vehicles, allows employees to meet other staff members, reduces carbon emissions, and maximizes parking availability.

Steamboat also encourages both our community and our guests to “Do Good” when commuting to the resort. Carpooling, biking, and public transportation are all sustainable transit options. Steamboat Springs Transit runs busses to and from the resort throughout the winter.
