OVER 5 FEET OF CHAMPAGNE POWDER® SNOW BLANKETS SUMMIT SINCE JANUARY 1
With 8 Inches Overnight, Steamboat Hits 200 Inch Snowfall Milestone for the Season
More Than 16.5 Feet of Champagne Powder® Snow Has Fallen At Mid-Mtn Since October 1st
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO-January 13, 2014-Powderhounds’ fresh snow resolutions have rung true during the first two weeks of the New Year as the Steamboat Ski Resort has seen Champagne Powder® snow 11 out of the past 13 days and hit the 200-inch snowfall mark for the season this morning after receiving 8 inches of new snow overnight.
“With more than 5 feet in the past two weeks at the summit, Steamboat is enjoying some of the best snow and mountain conditions in the Rocky Mountains,” said Chris Diamond, president and chief operating officer for Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “January has come in like a lion in terms of snow and word about Steamboat’s conditions continue to travel around the globe.”
As of 5am, the resort is reporting 8 inches of new snow at mid-mountain and 10 inches in past 24 hours; 23.25 inches at mid and 28 at summit in the past 4 days; and 52.25 inches at mid and 62 inches at the summit for January with a whopping 62-inch base at mid-mountain and 78-inch base at the summit on powder conditions. Powderhounds are enjoying 165 trails across 2,965 acres (100% of the mountain) with 16 lifts.
So far, January snow is falling at twice the average rate. In the first two weeks of January, Steamboat has racked up 52.25 inches of snow at mid-mountain, just shy of its ten-year average of 67.8 inches for the entire month. During January, snow fell 11 out of 13 days (85%) with 6 of those days recording four or more inches. So far this season, Steamboat has been blanketed by 200 inches (16.67 feet) at mid-mountain and 212.5 inches (17.7 feet) at the summit. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5pm today. Forecasts call for snow to continue throughout the day into tomorrow; then high pressure pushes into the area late tomorrow and remains through the week.
“With all the snow this January at Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.®, a powder alert remains in full force and DEEP SNOW CONDITIONS exist on all parts of the mountain,” said John Kohnke, patrol director. “If skiing and riding in deep snow or near trees, steer clear of tree wells and stay with a partner. Remember, there is always room for a friend on a powder day.” The avalanche rating for the Steamboat zone is CONSIDERABLE on all aspects and elevations.
