Opt Outside and Burn off the Gravy
It’s the day after Thanksgiving, and like many Americans, I was feeling a bit sluggish this morning. I didn’t want to get out of bed, I didn’t want to go to work, and I certainly didn’t want to go Black Friday shopping. Luckily for me, work today involved taking a few turns — my first of the season.
After squeezing into my boots for the first time since April, I hopped on the gondola, which opened yesterday. Things up top are still a bit firm, but the sun drenched the trail and made for some nice turns about one-third of the way down Heavenly Daze.
We have six runs and two lifts open right now, and from Thunderhead Peak, you can link almost all of them together into a long, winding run down the mountain — covering more than 2,000 vertical feet in mere minutes. These early season groomer days are perfect for getting your legs in shape so you’re ready when a big storm hits.
The sun is peeking through the clouds this morning, and there is even a slight chance of snow a bit later today. This weak storm also means temperatures could get low enough tonight to make some snow. The magic number is 27 degrees or lower, when snowmakers typically can fire up the guns.
The next storm is forecast to arrive Monday night and drop snow Tuesday through Thursday. It’s a bit too early to know how much snow might accumulate, but keep an eye on the Steamboat daily snow forecast for the most accurate updates.
With some low temperatures and fresh snow, we should be able to open additional terrain in no time. Until then, go guess the 2017-18 season snowfall total for a chance to win lodging, lift tickets and a day cat skiing with Steamboat Powdercats. Enter the contest here.
