Noah Elliot and the Para World Cup – A Return to Steamboat
Although Paralympic Athlete Noah Elliott has moved on from the Yampa Valley, it will be a coming home party when he returns to compete in the Para Olympic Boardercross events hosted by Steamboat. This is also a coming home party for Para World Cup, as it hasn’t hosted a race in the states since 2017. These race events will be located in the Bashor Bowl area at Steamboat Resort, and open to public spectators throughout the events. From February 25-27, Para World Cup athletes will be competing in the snowboard cross discipline, and the events will feature three NorAm Cup races, and the U.S. Para Snowboard Championships.
The snowboard cross discipline involves heats of riders, competing on the course at the same time to beat the others in their heat down the course. Consisting of large banked and bowled turns, gap jumps, rollers and many other unique features, the snowboard cross course is unlike any other racing style, combining speed and board control with aerial awareness and the element of having other racers on the course at the same time as you. When you add up all of these elements and combine it with some of the best snowboarders in the world, it provides for a very fast-paced and entertaining race event.
As it is the first time since 2017 that the Para World Cup has come back to the United States, it will be the first time that many of these American athletes have competed in their home country. Noah Elliot, is one of these athletes, and while he’s had ties to Steamboat since he was as a kid, this will be Noah’s first time competing here. As a teenager, Noah was diagnosed with cancer. During his treatment, he had the chance to go to Steamboat with the Sunshine Kids Foundation, and fell in love with the sport of snowboarding. Noah finished his treatment, overcoming his cancer, but losing a lower leg in the process. Regardless of this hurdle, he began his pursuit of a career as a snowboarder, honing his skills on the U.S. Para Snowboard Team. Noah has been one of the best snowboarders in the world at his disciplines, and is a four-time World Champion along with seven World Championship medals to his name. Last season, Noah won six times on the World Cup circuit, and his high level of riding throughout the year helped him to win the overall Crystal Globes for the year.
Along with all of this, Noah has been a single father since he was 15 years old. Balancing having to beat cancer and working towards a career in snowboarding all while raising his daughter, Noah has and continues to impress and lead the way in every facet of his personal and professional life. Steamboat welcomed Noah back two seasons ago, to help the resort unveil the new expert terrain on Mahogany Ridge.
