Lower Mountain Bliss
With 17 inches of snow over the past week and sunny skies ahead, Steamboat is in perfect shape for some groomer day fun. My blogs are getting repetitive because every week, I’m reporting anywhere from 15 to 30 inches in the past week, but really, it’s testament to the consistent and noteworthy snowfall that Steamboat has been receiving all winter long.
That consistent and noteworthy snowfall has created a summit base of 96 inches and a mid-mountain base of 71 inches. With Steamboat boasting a solid base from top to bottom, skiing the summit and skiing lower mountain are both really fun and certainly worthwhile.
This morning, I chose to take some lower mountain laps, instead of heading up to Storm or Sunshine Peak. As most people are heading up high on the mountain, you can often find perfectly groomed runs all to yourself on lower mountain.
Some of my favorite lower mountain trails like Ted’s Ridge, Valley View, See Me, Vagabond and Heavenly Daze were all groomed, and even Concentration (the upper part) had recently been groomed. All of these trails provide scenic views straight into the Yampa Valley, and while not quite as spectacular as the summit views, they give you a view straight into the heart of Steamboat (which to me is often just as special).
Sunny skies are expected to prevail Friday and Saturday before the snow returns on Sunday. With a fantastic base and great weather, I hope you find yourself out on the slopes, soaking up the winter sun.
Ski and ride with care and have a great day on the mountain! Happy Thursday!
