Last Blast of Summer
The days are still warm, but the nights are getting colder in Steamboat. Even though the trees are still green, the air feels a bit crisper and you can sense that fall is around the corner. With the gondola closing soon and our first snow on the horizon, this weekend is truly our last chance to enjoy peak summer conditions up on Mt Werner.
One of my favorite things to do in Steamboat in the summer is riding the gondola up to Thunderhead with my wife and Daughter. The ride up is exciting enough for a 3 year old, but once your at the top you can do anything from a short nature hike around the Vista Nature Trail to getting lunch with a view Oasis Sun Deck. If you are really looking for a challenge, try taking the Sunshine loop up to the very top of the mountain for one of the best views in the Boat.
If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground and stay at the base area, the lawns by Burgess Creek are your best bet. You can grab some food at Timber and Torch, and enjoy your lunch while cooling off your feet in the crystal clear water. The base area is also where you will find the mountain coaster and the mini golf course if you are looking for a little excitement.
Even though the trails will be ok to ride for another month or so, the weather this weekend will be perfect for a bike ride or some disc golf. You can do both from the Thunderhead parking lot and now that the smoke is gone from the wildfires, the view north to Sleeping Giant should be amazing. The disc golf course starts right across the service rd from the Thunderhead lift and you have a couple of trail options for mountain biking. You can head up BC skiway to the Creekside and Pioneer Ridge trails, or you can take the road up a little ways to the Valley View trail. Either way, you will find some of my favorite trails in the valley.
With crystal clear blue skies overhead for today and tomorrow, this labor day weekend is the perfect send off to another great summer. While the global pandemic may have hampered a lot of our plans this year, getting outside has been the perfect solution. From trail running up Pioneer Ridge to hanging out at the base, Mt Werner has been a saving grace for many of us here in Steamboat. So enjoy the last weekend of summer and start waxing your skis because the powder will be flying before you know it.
