Follow the Sun
Here’s a Monday morning CHEERS to the incredible Steamboat Symphony Orchestra, the Yampa Valley Choral Society and the Steamboat Chamber Singers, who put on a heck of a beautiful Christmas Spectacular in the Strings Pavilion last
night. They even did their part to bring some of their magic to the slopes: a raucous sing-along of “Let It Snow” was a highlight of the show, fueled by community hopes of luring a polar vortex loaded with a blizzard to Steamboat.
Bring it on, snowflakes. It’s nice to see that a few of your buddies are still sticking to the pines up top – the trees are crystalized and looking glittery in the sun today. Pretty.
After a weekend that offered a dose of springtime in December, everyone has sun tanned cheeks to start off the work week. It looks like we have more of the same weather pattern for the next few days, so enjoy the soft turns, sun and relative quiet on Mount Werner before direct flights bring in the holiday crowd. With the opening of new terrain this weekend, now you’ve got more than 700 acres on which to ski and ride.
The sun is blazing over the ridge now, preparing to soften up the mountain for you most eveywhere.
Skiing is top-to bottom on Mount Werner. Follow the sun to maximize the long cruisers today, and stick to the top half of the mountain for the softest and most diverse terrain. With Sundown and Elkhead now open, I headed straight for a blaze down High Noon to Westside after a rolling run down Norther. Westside is always irresistible with a fresh groom and the sun was already peeking on to the run early today. The air is so calm today and the view never fails – especially as the early clouds start to break over the Yampa Valley.
Storm Peak face and Lower Rainbow are already nice and carvey – and I predict good things for Sunset as the day rolls on. Watch for hazards out there. Things are well marked , but it pays to be vigilant for little sticks and tree tops this time of year.
What a nice start to the week, whether you’re working or enjoying a gorgeous pre-holiday Steamboat vacation!
