We eat for lots of different reasons, including taste, smell and appearance. Eating makes us feel good, satisfies our hunger and emotion, and provides a great venue for socializing. But what does your body really need to sustain it for a day on the slopes?

Food provides the energy we need for a big day on the hill in addition to providing the building blocks to construct and repair muscle once we are done. For the best performance, it is important to get the right kinds of energy at the right times throughout the day.

Research shows that keeping your blood sugar stable can decrease reaction time by as much as three-quarters of a second, speeding up your reflexes and helping you respond more accurately.

So what will keep you going during a day on the hill? Breakfast is a great place to start. Aim for two-thirds carbohydrates and one-third proteins while keeping fat content to less than 30 percent.

Try these breakfast ideas at home:

• 1 cup of low fat, no-sugar added Greek yogurt or 1/2 cup of 1 percent cottage cheese or low-fat milk. Mix in 1 cup fresh or frozen chopped fruit of your choice. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup low-sugar cereal or cooked oatmeal. Add an extra 1/4 cup of dry skim milk powder for more protein.

• 1-2 eggs plus 1 egg white cooked with 1/2 teaspoon olive or coconut oil. Scramble the eggs with onions, garlic, peppers and a healthy dash of your favorite spices. Add 1/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese to the scrambled eggs for a bit of cheesy flavor and a lot more protein. Serve on 2 slices of dry, whole-grain toast or wrap it in a whole-wheat tortilla to make a portable breakfast. Enjoy with a 1/2 cup or 1 piece of fresh or frozen fruit.

• 2 pancakes topped with Greek yogurt and fresh fruit. Make the pancakes with Chia, ground flax, whole-wheat flour and extra egg whites or skim milk powder for more protein. You can cook these ahead of time and just pop them into the toaster to warm.
