First Day Giggles
Today was my first day back on skis for the season, and as always, it gave me those first day giggles that I love so much. Enjoying some nice turns on Heavenly Daze and Vogue is just what my legs needed to kick off the 2017-18 ski season.

If you’ve kept up with Steamboat, then you’ll already know that the snow gods and goddesses have not been so kind to us just yet. In fact, they really haven’t been so kind to Colorado in general. The good news is that cooler overnight temperatures have arrived, which means that there will be more opportunity for snowmaking in the days ahead to help establish a solid base before the snow arrives for the season.

And trust me, it will arrive for the season. Our record-setting snowfall year began very similar to this one. The 2007-08 season was also a La Nina year, and when the snow did finally arrive, it never left, dumping an impressive 489 inches on the mountain! According to Joel Gratz’s Open Snow report for Steamboat, we should see some snowfall Sunday into Monday, but may see a return of drier weather through the middle of the month. As my toddler would say, we may have to “go to the store and buy some patience” until the snow does arrive for the season, but until then, keep doing your very, very best snow dance each and every day.

Currently there are two lifts running (Christie Peak Express and the gondola) with access to six trails. From the top of the gondola, Heavenly Daze is open, and given the challenging weather conditions the mountain has had to work with, it was actually in great shape this morning. I’ve been hearing reports of how firm the early morning snow has been, but with an inversion on this lovely Wednesday morning, the Daze surprised me with some softer crystals spread lightly across the fresh corduroy.

With just a few other people on the slopes this morning and a couple of nicely groomed runs, I was able to fully enjoy those first day giggles that get me so excited for the rest of the ski season. If you haven’t yet, get out there and enjoy some first day giggles, as well!
Happy Wednesday!
