The mountains are white and our grass is blue this weekend. Welcome back to Steamboat, WinterWonderGrass! Steamboat “blues break” is officially a bluegrass break as of today.

Once again, we’re rolling out our finest winter carpet: 3 inches of delicious, light, dry snow overnight. Plus there’s a winter storm warning dialed to run right through the Greensky Bluegrass set Saturday night, with a powder morning predicted for Sunday.

In other words, the festival is delivering rockin’ tunes, pretty lights and delicious beer, and Mother Nature is planning to add the most glorious special effects with a mix of bluebird skies and giant snowflakes.

Team Snowball takes on the mountain

It’s soft and fluffy absolutely everywhere up there. As the music fan on my Elkhead chair proclaimed, “This snow makes me feel like Lindsey Vonn!”

Friday freshies next to Sunset

The trees are delicious, and there is plenty to go around. I started with skier’s left on Sunset, then headed for the trees between all those Wally World runs — Quickdraw, Tomahawk — this morning, zigging and zagging in and out for lots and lots of fresh tracks in the aspens.

Then I circled around to slurp up a bunch of soft, forgiving goodness on the edges of West Side and Ted’s Ridge.

Ski beside what’s groomed.

The air is crisp, keeping the snow positively perfect with more on the way!

While the tree skiing should be sweet this weekend, stay on alert for sneaky tree wells. With the recent string of storms (which included some epic wind), we’re on deep-well alert. Venture into the trees with a buddy and stay aware because a fall into deep tree well can be dangerous.

WonderGrass tickets are sold out, except for a few one-day passes for Sunday (Leftover Salmon). But if you missed out, don’t fret. There are super-fun, free bluegrass sets happening around town and on the mountain. Ride on down to the Steamboat Grand for lunch Saturday and Sunday, where the Public Pick is sure to lure many of the finest fiddlers for a jam.

Lift service to ski-in music. A perfect Steamboat weekend

And don’t miss Sunday’s sweet noon ski-in set at Rendezvous with Rockygrass band contest winners The Wooks. Those impromptu midday bluegrass boogies way up on the mountain were among my favorite vibes of last year’s festival, so cheers to creating more of that!

Groomed then dusted with 3 inches of pow

Pound some extra caffeine and rise from the couch of Olympics. Bundle up in your onesies, dancin’ snow boots and furry animal hats. Then holler it loud and proud over the mountaintops like the weird bluegrass geek that you are: Feeessstivaaal!
