Ski season, it’s finally here! After months of patiently waiting and even some warm November mountain bike rides in Steamboat, it’s time to feel the crisp winter air on our faces as we carve turns down beautiful Mt. Werner.
Every season of the year is magic in Steamboat, but there is something about winter that sets it apart from anything else. Flying through waist-deep Champagne Powder is an experience that is simply surreal, and lucky for us in Steamboat, it happens a lot. So much to look forward to in the season ahead, like carving fast turns down perfectly manicured groomers over the hood-deep powder days and enjoying some of the best skiing around under that famous Colorado blue bird sky. Ahhhh winter, my favorite.
While many skiers enjoyed a sneak peek of the mountain yesterday for Scholarship Day to support the Winter Sports Club, today is the first official day of the ski season. A surprisingly small crowd joined together at the Christie Peak Express lift this morning to enjoy some freshly groomed terrain on lower mountain. Mellow weather and nice Yampa Valley views came together for for a great morning of skiing.
While there is a limited amount of terrain open, it was enough to make some fast turns on a snow-covered slope. In a year where many resorts have delayed their opening for lack of snow, we are thankful to be skiing 1,100 vertical feet from the top of Christie Peak Express to the base area on opening day. This is a perfect amount of vertical to reintroduce your legs back into skiing for the year without too much thigh burn. We always wish for deep powder days right away, but at the beginning of the year, it is nice to get your legs ready for those big snow days ahead so you can ski confidently all day.
The snow was skiing much better than I had anticipated for mostly man-made conditions. We were able to make plenty of fast carving turns down Vogue trying to get our skiing back to where it was in April. The snow is always in its best condition first thing, so if you want to avoid any icy turns, get there early!
Our snow-making team is hard at work to get more of the mountain open, and it won’t be long until we are riding our favorite trails all over this amazing playground. It felt so good to stare at the snowy slopes of Steamboat Ski Area today wondering what the season ahead has in store for all of the locals and visitors to the Yampa Valley.
Pick of the day is Sitz. Although it is a small portion of the open terrain, it held the best turns of the morning.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. THINK SNOW!
