The time has come to say goodbye to another great season of shredding in Steamboat. Although I feel like this winter went by faster than any, I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the mountain, as I always do regardless of weather and snow conditions. Skiing for me is about the passion of the adventure outdoors and sharing that passion with others.

Week three of rotator cuff repair rehabilitation has gone extremely well. Better than expected, in fact. I am now going to physical therapy three times a week where we work on passive (assisted) range of motion, surrounding strength and stabilization, and posture. My overhead range of motion is well ahead of schedule, and my overall pain is minimal. I am gaining more strength and better posture with each session.

I have progressed to small exercises at home which focus on external rotation using a dowel to assist in the passive movement of my shoulder, twisting at the elbow. I have also progressed to using more heat than ice, which helps relax the joint, at the same time creating more circulation and strength within the joint. Soon I will move on to using a pulley to assist in raising my arm, and then progress from there to using bands to continue to build specific strength.

As I sit and write my last report of the season from home, I admire the ski mountain in the distance while I watch the grass grow and become greener before my eyes. Again I will spend time with my horse, and take a walk with my dogs.

No concert today means the finale of the Bud Light Rocks the Boat concert series tomorrow! I am an avid reggae fan and can’t wait to see the infamous Wailers! Always a show not to be missed, it’s fantastic that the original bassman, Aston “Familyman” Barrett, has continued to keep the band alive as well as the music and legend of the late, greats Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

Please come join my in jamming on Easter Sunday to some of the greatest music ever made! Stay safe, stay smart, be in control, smile, and give someone a hug!

Signing out for the season,

Brett Buckles, Alpine skier
