Happy Powder Birthday, Mr. President(s)!
We celebrate Presidents Day each year to honor the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Now I don’t know Mr. Washington or Mr. Lincoln personally, but I am willing to bet that a blanket of fresh Champagne Powder is at the top of their birthday wish lists. And when it snows on your birthday, it is a sure sign of a great year ahead.
While the 5am snow report didn’t have much fresh snow to speak of, the key ingredient in that report was “…. and snowing.” If you read the Straight Talk blogs often, you probably know I am a huge fan of the live Champagne Powder Snow Cam that is located at the top of Sundown Express. You can check this live camera 24 hours a day to see what is happening at the top of the mountain in terms of weather and snowfall. The snow was coming down hard early this morning and got me right out of bed and up to the mountain in anticipation of freshies. I was surprised by the lack of early crowds today with the new snow coming in, but it made for a very peaceful morning full of powdery solitude. The snow is light and fluffy, which covered the groomers perfectly to make for some glorious turns. The corduroy underneath the fresh flakes was smooth and consistent and gave us a perfect blend to celebrate some birthday powder with George and Abraham.
We checked out a variety of runs this morning to get an accurate snow report of what’s out there. The snow fell pretty evenly from Sundown to Storm Peak and Four Points to Morningside. South- or west-facing runs that weren’t groomed last night do have a bit of crunch underneath the powder, so we spent that last part of the morning making runs in the north-facing options off Morningside. I think a bit more snow fell up high as those were the best turns we made today, and there were open lines of fresh pow everywhere.
The holiday skiing crowd is starting to make a strong showing on the mountain, so get up here and get your share of the birthday cake … I mean powder!
Pick of the mountain today is No Names: When there is a good amount of fresh up top, it is an amazing zone to check out with steep trees and untracked lines.
See you on the mountain!
