I awoke yesterday morning to several inches of snow in my front lawn. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that it gave me a heap of excitement about the prospect of skiing soon. It’s just over a month away that our chairlifts will once again hum as they whisk skiers and riders to the top of Mount Werner.
But in the here and now, the lawns in and around Steamboat are covered with leaves and pumpkins have begun to adorn just about every doorstep I see in the neighborhood. Both kids and adults are looking forward to the Halloween Stroll that happens annually in downtown Steamboat on Oct. 31st.
My cruiser bikes have all been put away for the season, but my fat bike still holds a prominent space in my garage. This bike has 5-inch wide tires and is perfect for exploring the area’s mountain trails now and through the winter. I’ve recently been using it to explore the new singletrack you can find on Buffalo Pass (just outside of town), and it’s been terrific. Even with the fresh snow as of late, biking season is far from over for those equipped with thick wheels and a sense of adventure.
Here’s to starting the countdown to winter. As the air continues to cool and white flakes begin to fall from the sky, this is most definitely the season of great anticipation.
