Good morning from a “you had to be there to see it” morning in Steamboat.  If you looked out of your bedroom window this morning, the low cloud was very thick and maybe not so inviting for skiing.  But if you checked the Steamboat live mountain cams, it revealed a mostly clear and calm sky on the upper mountain. It is such a neat experience to be skiing high above the clouds on Steamboat Ski Area. There is also a bit of fresh snow up there today to welcome the holiday skiers.  Conditions are great, coverage is really coming along, and it is simply a wonderful day to be making turns in Steamboat!

As I mentioned, the low cloud at the base area  was thick and tough.  But at around Christie elevation, the cloud ended and beautiful Colorado  skies were revealed.  The wind is calm, the temperature is comfortable and the sun is shining bright.  No cold weather gear is needed today; it is nothing but nice out there.  But don’t let this sunny day fool  you. There is more fresh snow headed our way over the next few days, and it looks like we are going to have a white Christmas in Steamboat!

The snow is in excellent condition today.  We received 3″ at the summit last night and 2″ at mid-mountain to freshen things up.  The groomers are very soft, carvable and predictable today and in mid-winter condition with no ice to be found.  That little bit of fluff on top of the manicured corduroy today was such a treat to ski through.  We ventured into the trees and bumps around Flying Z as well — the bumps are soft and the little bit of fresh on top is great!

What a great day to be skiing Steamboat.  Just enough new snow to make some fresh turns and put the groomers in exceptional condition.  The holiday week has started, but it is still pretty quiet out there, so it is a good day to get up for a few runs if you can.  I have my eyes on the incoming storm that will treat us well over the next few days.  Steamboat has been very good this year, and it looks like Santa took note and is leaving us some nice gifts.  The trees and bumps are fun and worth a run or two, but I would keep it to the groomers today.  Everything is soft and the mountain is open top to bottom!

Pick of the mountain today is lower Rainbow: the snow is great and the carving is smooth.

Have a great day on the mountain!
