SUNSHINE BOWL AND MORNINGSIDE PARK SET TO OPEN THIS WEEK PUSHING TERRAIN TO 1,545 ACRES
With a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until Wednesday morning and a foot of fresh snow over the past five days, the Steamboat Ski Resort will open two key areas of the mountain, Sunshine Bowl and Morningside Park, this week.
“I couldn’t think of a better place to spend the holidays than Steamboat-Ski Town, U.S.A.®,” said Rob Perlman, president and chief operating officer for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “With the snow this past weekend and continued hard work by resort crews, the mountain is in fantastic shape to serve up great skiing and riding as well as all the holiday trimmings that our guests are accustomed to.”
The resort’s terrain will move to 92 trails, 1,417 acres and 12 lifts tomorrow when Sunshine Bowl opens with its popular intermediate trails such as Tomahawk, Quickdraw and Flintlock. Sundial will remain closed due to snowmaking, so there will be no beginner access from the top of Sunshine.
Morningside chairlift will start turning on Wednesday, December 16 providing lift access to trails in Morningside Park such as Alarm Clock, Cowboy Coffee, Over Easy and Hot Cakes as well as East Face off the top of Mt. Werner. Depending upon a series of storms forecast this week, Pioneer Ridge could open for hike-to access as early as this coming weekend. Trails and lifts are subject to change without notice.
Steamboat’s First Tracks, the early access program in the Priest Creek and Sunshine areas, will begin on Wednesday, December 16 hosting First Tracks passholders and ticket participants as well as a limited number of season passholders as part of Passholder Appreciation Week. The free First Tracks passholders option must be reserved in advance and is expected to fill to capacity. Reservations can be made by calling 970-879-0740 or in the ticket office, prior to 5pm on Tuesday, December 15, unless the program fills sooner.
With these additions, the open terrain at the resort will expand to 1,545 acres across 100 trails, 3,668 vertical feet, serviced by 13 lifts. Terrain for all ability levels grows with 24% – green trails, 71% – blue trails, 32% – blue/black trails; 54% – black trails and 26% – expert trails open for skiing and riding. Rabbit Ears Terrain Park is expected to be ready possibly as early as this weekend. The resort anticipates being close to 100% open for the upcoming holiday period.
A series of storms blanketed the mountain with a foot of snow in the past five days, bringing the season total at mid-mountain to 81.25 inches/6.77 feet. The resort is reporting a 28-inch base at mid-mountain and 31-inch base at the summit on packed powder conditions. Steamboat remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until Wednesday at 9am as a cold front moves across the area with periods of snow and accumulations of 6 to 12 inches possible. Wraparound flow will keep snowfall going for northern areas like Steamboat with additional accumulations likely.
Snowmaking crews recently surpassed the 90 million gallons mark, far ahead of what is typical for this time of year, and will continue to take advantage of weather patterns that are favorable to snowmaking. Crews are currently focused on Huffman’s, Moonlight, lower Valley View, Bashor Bowl, Maverick’s Halfpipe, NASTAR, Rough Rider, Sundial and Voo Doo.
