Clashing of the seasons
Springtime weather in Steamboat is always a mixed bag. One day you’re enjoying cocktails on the patio and getting a bit too much sun, and the next day you’re pulling the down jackets back out of the closet.
On Mother’s Day, my Facebook news feed was filled with photos of springtime blooms covered in a layer of fresh snow. Snow in May isn’t out of the ordinary for Steamboat, but it’s always hard to readjust to the cold after you’ve already broken in your flip-flops. There’s no guarantee these are the last flakes we’ll see, but the forecast is looking sunny!
This time of year, the Yampa Valley is turning a bright shade of green and our athletic pursuits turn to water sports on the swollen Yampa River. When spring storms and snowmelt have the river near peak flows, we celebrate with the Yampa River Festival. The weekend features events for kayakers, rafters, stand-up paddleboarders and even our four-legged friends.
As the spring sun works to dry out the trails, runners and bikers start training for summer events. For all you runners, the Steamboat Marathon is June 7, and the full Steamboat Springs Running Series schedule can be found here. Road biking is in full swing, and some of the mountain biking trails in the valley have opened. Keep up to date with trail conditions here.
Up at the ski area, the Steamboat Bike Park is scheduled to open June 11 for Sponsorship Day, which benefits local cycling group Routt County Riders. Summer is just around the corner!
