Spring has officially sprung! Today, March 20th, marks the official spring equinox of 2015. For all of us fans of spring skiing, this is a great time to get out and enjoy Steamboat’s famous bluebird days. For many people, the spring snow conditions can be a bit challenging. Don’t fret, here are some important tips that are sure to help.
With the warm days and cool nights, the snow can be quite firm and slick first thing in the morning. Go ahead and give yourself some extra time and allow the surface to soften up. Generally speaking, the conditions are much more user friendly by about 10 a.m. than first thing in the morning.
As is the case any time of year, properly tuned equipment is extremely important. Spring is no exception as the varying conditions can create havoc on poorly tuned skis. With the warm temperatures and differing conditions, make sure you give yourself every opportunity to enjoy it.
Keep in mind that as the snow melts, there can be natural obstacles that become more evident daily. Be aware of your surroundings and the ever-changing environment that you will be enjoying. Take care when going down a run for the first time as terrain can change from one day to the next.
This may sound trivial, but the sun is strong and can be quite damaging without proper protection. Make sure you continue to reapply your sunscreen as the day goes on.
Beyond all else, enjoy the beauty of our playground called Steamboat.
