I’ve come to the realization that there are people who enjoy every aspect of the outdoors and those who simply don’t. For those of us who call Steamboat home or visit for vacation, I officially dub thee “mountain people.” It’s people like you that look around at this fine community and soak in every aspect of enjoyment that our outdoor lifestyle provides. Whether you ski, ride or find alternative means to enjoy our ski area, the call of the mountains lives somewhere inside you, and I commend that.
I suppose I’m writing this way because it’s this time of year that we begin to entertain multi-sport days. It’s not uncommon to ski in the morning and go for a bike ride in the afternoon. Traveling the bike path yesterday, I even witnessed a slew of kayakers hitting the whitewater for the first time this spring. A lot of people are using their fat bikes to ride the trails before they completely melt for the summer season. And heck, long afternoon hikes aren’t uncommon after a day of sliding and riding our fair resort. And if that sounds like too much activity, our famous Springalicious™ Festival begins April 1. Activities include live music, rail jam, pond skim and the Cardboard Classic. And for those of us “mountain people,” there’s nothing better than spending the afternoon at the base of our ski area in April.
As far as today’s skiing conditions go, it was enjoyable to get on the slopes early. The morning snow was set up nicely from last night’s groom and the snow was cold and fast. As the sun began to rise, I could already feel the warmth on my cheeks. By midday today, I predict we’ll see the all too familiar spring slush that’s common for this time of year. But that only ignites the “mountain people” mentality. Getting after it and tackling slush bumps, soggy mashed potato groomers, and soft terrain park landings is what we live for this time of year.
So feel free to set that mountain spirit free. Grab your skis or board, and spend some time on our mountain. Take a long, deep breath of fresh mountain air and know that life here is pretty darn good today. Because where else do mountain people find freedom if not atop the mountain?
Mountain People Unite!
