After many weeks of patiently waiting and quite a few snow dances, our day has come. While Sunday was a great powder day, today really made Steamboat feel like Steamboat again. Last night’s snow storm was a game changer… welcome to winter in the Boat!
If you are a powderhound, you should keep note of the Steamboat Powder Cam located at the top of Sundown Express that allows real time viewing of just how deep it’s going to be up there. I knew before my head hit the pillow last night that today was going to be a very good day. The 5am report called 17″ at the summit from the last 2 days and still snowing; certainly the news we have all been waiting for.
Every run from 4 Points to Storm to Sundown and beyond was simply awesome today – the powder was deep and the smiles were wide. No doubt the best day of the year so far. The bottom layer is soft and any hard pack is buried, allowing for exploration of all the spots Steamboat is famous for. We found runs in the trees to be in great shape as well, but do keep in mind that early season obstacles are still hiding so be careful out there.
There are still tons of fresh tracks to be had as I write this report at 10:30 – so grab your powder skis and head up for some deep and fluffy turns. What a great day in the Yampa Valley!
