Crisp, Clear and COLD!
Good morning, Steamboat! Thank goodness for inversions because today is a frigid one out there! Don’t let the cold temperatures turn you away from skiing or riding because the sun is shining and the snow is sparkling.
As I pulled into the parking lot, my car thermometer read -7 degrees. Dang! But as I made my way up the gondola and then up Storm Peak Express, the temperature warmed up considerably. Inversions are common here in Steamboat, and today we are especially thankful! Before writing today’s blog, Switchboard Kent informed me that it was a balmy 20 degrees at the top of Storm Peak while still reading -1 at the base.
Today was a day I like to call the conditions ‘hero snow’. The manicured corduroy allows for carving perfect railroad-track arcs. The cold, grippy snow lets you gracefully set your ski on edge, and easily stand on it while it makes a perfect carve in the snow. Today’s early risers got a taste of the best ‘hero snow’ around. Hard to believe it’s barely December because our coverage is great! More trails are opening nearly every day.
The remnants of the last couple days of powder were evident at the side of the runs. I couldn’t help but to pop into the trees along Rudi’s Run, Rainbow and Buddy’s Run just to get a first teaser taste of the Champagne Powder that is sure to surprise us many times over this winter.
On days like today, be sure to cover up all exposed skin. If skiing or riding with friends, do each other favors and check for frostbite on noses and cheeks. It doesn’t take much for your skin to freeze, and when it does, it takes longer to heal and is more damaging than you realize. Cover white, frostbitten skin immediately and go inside to warm up.
I’m headed back out to eat up some more ‘hero’ corduroy!
Happy Skiing and Riding,
Brett Buckles, Alpine skier
