After what feels like weeks of cooler weather, rain and even a bit of late-season snow, summer in Steamboat seems to have finally arrived. The base area at the resort is beaming with activity and all appears right with the world.

If you’re visiting the area this summer, don’t miss the action at the resort, but be aware of some modifications to our mountain activities while our gondola gets an upgrade. Today (Sunday, 6/9) the ‘Land Up’ is open from 11am-5pm. This includes scenic chairlift rides, the Outlaw Mountain Coaster, Maverick Mini Golf, the Kilimanjaro Climbing Wall and much more.

When I was strolling through Gondola Square yesterday, I spotted several kids scaling the climbing wall with huge, beaming smiles. Perhaps the recent movie release, Free Solo, has inspired a new generation of climbers inspired to scale large peaks. Or maybe it’s just plain ‘ol fun that motivates people to rope up and climb.

A group of adults clad in formalwear were lounging on the red adirondack chairs, as if waiting for an event to begin. It appears that someone was set to get married on the mountain, which isn’t too uncommon to see around here. I too got hitched to my wife at the top of the mountain back in the summer of 2002 and scenic vistas were incredible.

Mountain base area activities will close after 5pm today, but re-open again on Friday for the weekend. Daily activities start in earnest on June 28th, but be sure to check out the calendar when making plans for your stay.

Happy Trails,
